The Changing Light

Lawrence Ferlinghetti, 1919

The changing light
                 at San Francisco
is none of your East Coast light
                none of your
                            pearly light of Paris
The light of San Francisco
                        is a sea light
                                       an island light
And the light of fog
                   blanketing the hills
          drifting in at night
                      through the Golden Gate
to lie on the city at dawn
And then the halcyon late mornings
       after the fog burns off
and the sun paints white houses
with the sea light of Greece
                 with sharp clean shadows
                       making the town look like
                                it had just been painted

But the wind comes up at four o’clock
                                     sweeping the hills

And then the veil of light of early evening

And then another scrim
                  when the new night fog
                                        floats in
And in that vale of light
                      the city drifts
                                    anchorless upon the ocean

A Mighty Woman With a Torch

“The New Colossus” by Emma Lazarus
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name Mother of Exiles.
From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
“"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!"” cries she
With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

INKTOBER - Days 25,26,27 - Stank Fish Attract Crabs. Nasty Ain't Nothin New to Me

I started with the best intentions to try and give some "true" color to these crabbies,  Dungeness-ish.  But I only have one purple marker.  I also believe some subconscious level interjected control over the color mixing --The Seahawks are playing in New Orleans this week!  Mardi Gras Crabs!

Crab is delicious.  Even friendly crab.

Study/Sketch and larger edition - what a difference quality paper can make on the blending!

Detail...

Yes, we crab!!!! not a keeper....

Bait. Stomp those heads and release the juice.  Stop and smell what the sun has baked you....

...and a Mummy,  I went to Egypt in 2000.  So I'm an expert...
was going to have the wraps write my name in the sky but, you know, laziness....

INKTOBER: 23,24- I too am not a bit tamed, I too am untranslatable, I sound my barbaric yawp over the roofs of the world.

Where the yellow-crown’d heron comes to the edge of the marsh at night and feeds upon small crabs,

Where the splash of swimmers and divers cools the warm noon,
Where the katy-did works her chromatic reed on the walnut-tree over the well,

Meet Cecil.
